Skywatch Friday - Sunsets, Glorious Sunsets !

I love looking at the sky .... it has so many faces and moods !!

This was a sunset that I captured a little while ago, while the Hubby and I were out on an evening walk.

I think that there had been a number of bad wild fires in California, which tends to make for spectacular sunsets here in Northern Nevada..

The sky literally looked like it was on fire and the colours changed as we stood, spellbound, watching....

In the summer of 2007, there was a large wildfire, up in the hills, directly in front of us. As the sun started to slip behind the plumes of heavy, yellow smoke, it started to turn red.

made for quite a spectacular sight...

Unfortunately, it looks very much like there will be more opportunities, this summer, for photos like these. :-(

Go to SKYWATCH for views of the sky from all over the world !

  4. The fire's smoke did make a great shot. How can something so destructive create something so lovely?

  5. Hah, our wildfires gave you all this brilliance. Superb captures.

  6. Stunning skies! But not what you want to see where there is destruction.

  7. Wonderous skies, spectacular colours, pity it takes a wild fire to bring up such great colour, but we can all enjoy the beauty.

  10. Beautiful shots, particularly the second - those colours are unbelievable and the trees look as though there's fire in the sky behind them.

  12. The bare trees look great against those wonderful colours.

Scary smoke but it did make for a good shot!

  13. Karen: What a wonderful sunset to capture even if the reason for the color was bad.

  14. Your sunset pictures are gorgeous. When we go on vacation, I am always trying to capture a sunset...but they are often hard to get a good shot over here on the East coast!

  17. that first shot really is a spectacular sunset.

on some days in autumn and winter, you see similar shots in crete, but now that spring is here, you never get this kind of sky. summer is simply blue blue blue with a faint rainbow tinge in the evening and that's it (that's what you get for living in the mediterranean)

  19. Wow what amazing sky captures, especially the colors of not the typical blues, but such vibrant hues!

  20. The smoke does create a nice effect in the sky - it does look a bit threatening though! The middle's my favourite, with the tree branches :)

  21. I like those spectacular colors on the bottom one. Too bad for the condishions that made it possible. Still, it's a great shot! Happy SWF!

  25. Oh, those are fiery orange, purples and a combination of red, just wonderful combination. Yeah, sad about wild fires. It happens all the time when we are not so careful. Have a great Memorial Day weekend.

  26. What a beautiful sky! too bad it takes fires to give that rich color.

  27. Superb SWF shots, I so often stand awe struck gazing up at the sky.
Smoke, dust or sandstorms, also fog, give great effects when obscuring the sun.

  28. Great photos! And the last is a very impressive shot, but it is sad too.

  29. Truly glorious sunsets! Beautiful colours and the last picture is stunning :)
